Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Services
Course Description: This course provides an accessible, updated overview of integrated services and evidence-based practices for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders (COD), drawing on a 2024 SAMHSA Issue Brief prepared for state mental health directors and policymakers. The course reviews the definition and prevalence of COD, including national data from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, and examines the negative outcomes associated with a lack of evidence-based integrated care. It surveys structural, workforce, financing, and philosophical barriers to integrated services, along with potential solutions, and presents SAMHSAs six guiding principles for working with individuals with COD. The course also covers the effectiveness of integrated care, the role of the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic model, behavioral health crisis care services, and workforce and administrative considerations including telehealth flexibilities. Finally, the course reviews a range of evidence-based practices used across the behavioral health continuum, including SBIRT, the Collaborative Care Model, the Primary Care Behavioral Health model, medications for opioid and alcohol use disorders, trauma-informed care, cognitive behavioral therapy, contingency management, and recovery-oriented community and residential supports.
This course on co-occurring mental health and substance use services is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of co-occurring mental health and substance use services. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
