Suicide Prevention Strategies for Underserved Youth
Course Description: This course examines suicide risk and prevention among underserved youth ages 10–24, including American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic or Latino, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and intersex (LGBTQI+) populations. Draqwing on SAMHSAs Evidence-Based Resource Guide Series, the course reviews disparities in suicide rates, risk and protective factors, and the systemic, cultural, and structural barriers—such as inadequate insurance coverage, stigma, language access, and structural racism—that limit access to mental health and crisis services for these populations. Practitioners will examine evidence-based and promising school-, family-, and community-based prevention programs, including culturally grounded interventions developed specifically for AI/AN, Black/African American, Hispanic or Latino, and LGBTQI+ youth. The course concludes with guidance on culturally responsive and equitable program evaluation, implementation frameworks, and available clinical and community resources to support culturally competent suicide prevention practice.
This course on suicide prevention strategies for underserved youth is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of suicide prevention among underserved youth populations. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.

Learning Objectives: This course will provide a professional with detailed information about suicide prevention strategies for underserved youth. Specifically, the practitioner will:
1. Describe suicide risk factors and disparities affecting American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic or Latino, and LGBTQI+ youth.
2. Identify systemic, cultural, and structural barriers that limit underserved youths access to mental health and crisis services.
3. Evaluate evidence-based and promising school-, community-, and family-based programs for preventing suicide among underserved youth.
4. Apply culturally grounded and population-specific interventions designed to reduce suicide risk in underserved youth populations.
5. Utilize evaluation frameworks and implementation resources to support culturally responsive suicide prevention programming.
