Recorded Webinar
EMDR therapists occasionally encounter moments when reprocessing appears to stall, loop, or lose momentum. This training examines how to clinically recognize stalled processing within the framework of the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and the standard eight-phase EMDR protocol. The course emphasizes the thoughtful use of cognitive interweaves addressing themes of responsibility and defectiveness, safety and vulnerability, and power, control, or choice. Practical decision-making guidelines will be provided to help clinicians determine when to continue standard reprocessing, shift to ancillary targets, or temporarily pause EMDR to return to stabilization. Through clinical examples and demonstration, participants will strengthen their confidence and competence in restarting stuck processing while preserving client safety and therapeutic attunement.
Presenter Bio:
Holly Forman-Patel is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). She utilized her skills as a therapist and program director working with children in school environments and in community mental health settings while simultaneously growing her private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. She recently relocated to Dallas, Texas, where she continues her private practice via telehealth, supporting clients in dual geographies.
Holly specializes in working with children and teens, along with adults, primarily around trauma and anxiety. Holly has published two workbooks on anger management for children and teens.
In her work, Holly utilizes multiple modalities with a primary emphasis on EMDR Therapy. She was first trained in EMDR Therapy in 2012 and moved forward to certification and then to Approved Consultant. She is currently an EMDR Trainer with EMDR Professional Training. She has presented various advanced trainings in EMDR Therapy, including at the EMDRIA Conference. Additionally, she provides the needed hours for EMDR certification and EMDR approved consulting for trained EMDR therapists.
Timeline:
Objective 1 (recognizing stalled reprocessing within the AIP model and eight-phase protocol): 17 minutes
Objective 2 (cognitive interweaves for responsibility, safety, and power/control themes): 78 minutes
Objective 3 (strategies to restart processing, shift targets, or return to stabilization): 85 minutes
TOTAL: 3 hours
Learning Objectives
Participants will leave the training with the ability to:
1. Explain how to recognize when EMDR reprocessing is stalled and how this fits within the AIP model and standard eight-phase protocol.
2. Describe and demonstrate cognitive interweaves that address responsibility/defectiveness, safety/vulnerability, and power/control or choice when reprocessing is stuck.
3. Identify and describe practical strategies to restart stalled EMDR processing, including when to continue standard reprocessing, when to shift to ancillary targets, and when to pause EMDR to return to stabilization.
