Intimate Partner Violence in Steady State Conditions
Course Description: This course examines intimate partner violence (IPV) as it presents during steady state—non-emergency—conditions, drawing on Chapter 2 of the 2024 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report Essential Health Care Services Addressing Intimate Partner Violence. Participants explore national prevalence data from the CDCs National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, including disparities across racial, ethnic, and demographic groups. The course provides an in-depth review of population-specific considerations, covering the elevated burden of IPV experienced by American Indian and Alaska Native women, pregnant and postpartum women, adolescents, Black women, LBTQ populations, rural women, women with disabilities, immigrant women, and women facing housing, food insecurity, and substance use challenges. The course further addresses individual-, relationship-, community-, and society-level risk and protective factors associated with IPV perpetration, and examines the multilayered barriers to disclosure faced by diverse survivor populations, including shame, fear of retaliation, concerns about child custody, immigration status, and cultural norms that discourage help-seeking.
This course on intimate partner violence in steady state conditions is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of IPV prevalence, population-specific risk factors, and barriers to disclosure in non-emergency clinical settings. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require domestic violence or intimate partner violence continuing education courses for license renewal.

Learning Objectives: This course will provide a professional with detailed information about intimate partner violence in steady state conditions. Specifically, the practitioner will:
- Identify national prevalence rates of intimate partner violence (IPV), differentiate IPV rates across racial and ethnic subgroups, and describe population-specific vulnerabilities.
- Describe elevated IPV risk and distinctive challenges faced by Black women, LBTQ populations, rural women, women with disabilities, immigrant women, and women experiencing housing insecurity or substance use disorders.
- Identify individual-, relationship-, community-, and society-level risk and protective factors associated with IPV perpetration.
