Course Description: This course examines the role of peer-led recovery support services in addressing behavioral health disparities in rural and agricultural communities across the United States. Drawing on SAMHSA’s April 2026 Advisory, it explores how peer support specialists-individuals with lived experience of mental health and substance use disorder recovery-serve as critical assets in expanding access to non-clinical, community-based interventions. It also covers practical strategies including recovery listening sessions, community recovery symposiums, and peer-led advocacy to build recovery-oriented infrastructure in rural settings.
This course is appropriate for beginning and intermediate-level practitioners who wish to learn more about peer recovery support in rural communities. It is also a good resource for certified specialists or licensed therapists who need continuing education for renewal.

Learning Objectives: This course will provide a professional with detailed information about peer recovery support services for behavioral health in rural communities. Specifically, the practitioner will:
1. Describe the behavioral health challenges facing rural communities and the defining characteristics and roles of peer support specialists, including SAMHSA’s four dimensions of recovery.
2. Identify barriers to recovery programming in rural settings and explain how the peer support workforce has grown to address behavioral health care gaps.
3. Describe peer-led strategies – including recovery listening sessions, community recovery symposiums, and grassroots advocacy—to build and sustain recovery-oriented infrastructure in rural communities.
