Decolonizing Therapy: Reading and Action Group for MH Professionals
credit limit =
total earned credit = +
In this critical political moment, mental health professionals are confronting unparalleled challenges. The climate crisis, along with other traumas such as political turmoil and polarization at a global and national level, economic pressures, disease epidemics, pervasive violence and injustice at home and abroad, and fast technological development all continue to contribute to a deepening mental health crisis and a collective sense of disillusionment with systems that perpetuate harm rather than healing. Traditional mental health models, rooted in medicalized frameworks, are increasingly insufficient in addressing the root causes of psychological suffering and systemic inequality.
This course, Decolonizing Therapy: Reading and Action Group for Mental Health Professionals, offers a space for mental health professionals committed to decolonizing their practices to engage with powerful texts and ideas that challenge the status quo of mental health care using a social justice framework. The course aims to deepen participants’ learnings in critical theory, cultural competency, political cultural competency, and decolonization within mental health, empowering them to confront harmful practices within mental health care and build a foundation for radical change. Through collective reading, group reflection, discussion, activities, and action, participants will create personal frameworks for healing that move beyond conventional models and are grounded in justice, community, and radical self-care.
Presenter Bio:
Dr. Bibi Pirayesh is an educational therapist and social justice advocate with over a decade of experience at the intersection of mental health, education, and systemic change. She holds a Master’s from Columbia University in psychology and a doctorate from Loyola Marymount in social justice and neuroscience. She supports professionals in reimagining their work through a justice-centered lens.
Timeline:
2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month 5:00-6:30 pm PST for 4 months March 11 and 25, April 8 and 22, May 13, and 27, June 10 and 24
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
Describe and apply relevant theories of decolonization in mental health practice, recognizing the limitations of traditional models and their impact on marginalized communities.
Identify harmful practices within the mental health field that perpetuate systemic oppression and colonial structures.
Summarize the 4C Framework for Radical Love (Learning Theory, Building Community, Collective Political Action, and Radical Self-Care) and apply its principles to their personal and professional practices.
Apply cultural competency by critically engaging with diverse, decolonial, and indigenous perspectives on mental health, and implement interventions that center community and justice.
Demonstrate political cultural competency by reflecting on their own political positionality and exploring how client and therapist politics can impact practice.
Develop concrete, actionable steps for implementing social justice principles in their therapeutic work and within their communities.
Identify ways they can foster community and collective action to create spaces for healing, resistance, and transformation in the face of systemic harm.
Distinguish between radical self-care and mainstream ideas of self-care in order to address burn-out in meaningful ways.
