Recovering From Behavior and Substance Addiction with EMDR Therapy

This workshop focuses on the use of EMDR therapy to aid in the recovery from behavioral and substance addictions. It addresses the use of this therapy when the client is not abstinent or is in early recovery and how to proceed while still being cautious of the potential impact on their use. The workshop discusses how to utilize addiction specific protocols as well as standard protocol to address common issues faced within this population. Initially the focus is on how to adapt resourcing and history taking for the addictions population and how to identify when clients are “stable enough” to proceed with EMDR therapy. Training is provided throughout the presentation on assessments, risk factors, and vulnerabilities to developing an addictive disorder. The second portion of the training focuses on how to desensitize triggers, cravings, urges, avoidance defenses and “positive feeling states” related to compulsive behaviors while exploring how they fit into the overall EMDR treatment plan. Information on special considerations for treatment of this population are reviewed. The workshop focuses on how to
use addiction protocols and standard protocols to increase stability in this population so that the continued work can move into focusing on the underlying trauma. All teaching points are highlighted with case examples, videos, demonstrations, practicum, video clips and discussion. No modifications of phases 3-6 of the standard EMDR protocol are being proposed.
Presenter Bio:
Sarah Osborne, LPC, LADC, NCC
Sarah Osborne, LPC, LADC, NCC is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, and Nationally Certified Counselor. She is a HAP Approved Facilitator, and EMDRIA Approved Consultant & Advanced Credit Provider who specializes in the treatment of addiction, complex trauma and dissociation. She has experience working in community mental health settings and private addiction treatment centers. Sarah is actively involved with integrating EMDR therapy into several addiction facilities across the levels of care. She is dedicated to promoting space for healing and wellness across diverse populations in her private EMDR practice, the work she does with first responders, and as a co-owner of a perinatal group practice. She also provides ongoing individual and group consultation to all levels of EMDR professionals and consultants-in-training
Timeline:
Day One
12-1:00 PM – Intro of presenter and brief survey of knowledge base of audience. Introduction to theuse of EMDR therapy with addictive disorders and the connection between trauma and addiction—citing research in this area.
1:00-1:30 – Resourcing and Stabilization – review resourcing and stabilization skills. Future Rehearsal,videos to support learning.
1:30-1:45 Break
1:45-2:30pm – Teaching 3 step exercise connected to positive affect tolerance protocol, reviewingwindow of tolerance. Teach WOT worksheet and how to create Resourcing Map. Review clinicalexample
2:30 -3:00 – Practicum of future rehearsal for access to positive future exercise and 3 step exercise formPAT

3:15-4:30 – How do you know when client’s are stable enough? Review considerations of stabilityrelevant to addiction
Day Two

12:30-1:30 Phase 1 – History Taking – considerations for addiction. Teaching about ACE, PTSD vs CPTSD,red and yellow/green flags to monitor during history taking, clinical example review

1:45 – 3:00 – Treatment planning – Specific questions and topics to cover to begin to set up the use ofthe addictions protocols for treatment – Begin to consider and create own treatment plans
3 – 3:15 pm Break
3:15-4:15 How to choose a starting point based on clinical considerations (current use, reasons forusing, trauma history and how it connects to use)
4:15-4:30 – Questions and Open Discussion
Day Three

1:15-2:30pm Continued teaching of AF protocols. Identify when to use Addiction vs standard protocol.
2:30 pm – 3pm group practice addressing one positive feeling state or avoidance target

3:15-3:30 Considerations when working with this population
3:30-4:00 How to begin to think about implementing these tools in the variety of treatment settings.
4:00-4:30 Review, open questions, discussion of next steps – consultation, implementation and furtherresources.
Learning Objectives
• Describe how trauma is connected to the vulnerability to addiction.
• Explain the basic findings of the ACE (Adverse Childhood Experience) Study.
• Identify history taking questions that can be used to assess client readiness for trauma processing
• Identify history taking questions that can be used to assess addictions
• Identify common resourcing needs of persons with histories of complex trauma and addiction.
• Identify at least two addiction specific stabilization options for phase 2
• Describe the steps involved in addressing and desensitizing cravings, urges and triggers related to behavioral/substance addictions.
• Explain the term “maladaptive positive feeling state”
• Identify how to address the maladaptive “positive” feelings, body sensations or irrational cognitions linked to addictions
• Identify and describe when to address underlying trauma using Standard Protocol EMDR Therapy would be appropriate
• Identify and describe when the use of Addictions Protocols would be appropriate
• Identify treatment planning options and common NC/PCs related to addiction.
• Describe how to apply EMDR therapy to address common treatment barriers.
