Regardless of the theoretical framework applied to identify the causes of addiction, mindfulness can be a valuable orientation in treating those struggling with addictions. Mindfulness can be conceptualized as a process, a skill, and an outcome in the treatment of individuals coping with substance use disorders and addictions. This presentation will cover the clinician’s role, mindfulness-based skills, key treatment guidelines, and Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention. There will be time for discussion and experiential exploration. Forty years ago, Dr. Cammarata found himself as the Assistant Chief Clinical Psychologist of the largest addiction treatment facility in the United States, if not the world. He had no choice in the matter; at the time he was a US Navy officer and psychologist.
Presenter Bio:
Larry Cammarata, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist specializing in mindfulness-oriented psychotherapy and mind-body medicine. He was designated as an “Author-Expert” by IDEA for his writing, teaching, and service in the field of mind-body health, fitness, and wellness. Larry is a professional speaker and workshop presenter who has made contributions to local, national, and international retreats and conferences. His work on mindful movement was presented at the 11th Annual International Scientific Conference of the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. Larry is the Director of Education of Mindfulness Travels, an organization that provides continuing education to healthcare professionals through international retreats that integrate mindfulness-based psychology and mindful movement training with cross-cultural adventures. He is also the Director of Training for East Bay Mindfulness Center. In addition to his involvement in the profession of psychology, Larry is an instructor of the Chinese martial and healing arts of Taijiquan (Tai Chi) and Qigong. He received his doctorate from the California School of Professional Psychology and completed his clinical internship at the National Naval Medical Center in 1983. Larry has been a practicing psychologist for over 30 years.
