Intermediate Clinical Hypnosis Skills Course
The Intermediate Clinical Hypnosis Skills course is an 8-week, multisession virtual course with 14-hours of live (synchronous) content and 13 hours of online self-study (asynchronous) content designed to train mental health practitioners in Intermediate Clinical Hypnosis techniques that can be used as an adjunct to evidence-based treatments for stress management, anxiety, and pain management.
Participants will gain competence in therapeutic applications of clinical hypnosis, with hands-on practice delivering various hypnotic techniques and creating personalized hypnotic suggestions to help clients reduce anxiety, relieve pain, break problematic habits and promote positive health behaviors. This course also meets the requirements of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis Level 2 training and is recognized by the United States Veterans Healthcare Administration.
Presenter Bio:
Courtney Armstrong, LPC/MHSP is a licensed professional counselor with 25 years’ experience who specializes in grief and trauma recovery. She is the Founder of the Institute for Trauma Informed Hypnotherapy which trains mental health professionals worldwide and developed a successful national hypnosis training program for the United States Veterans Health Administration. In 2024 she was given the Presidential Award from the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis for her innovative contributions in teaching hypnosis. She has also contributed to several professional publications and is author of the books Rethinking Trauma Treatment: Attachment, Memory Reconsolidation and Resilience, The Therapeutic “Aha!” and Transforming Traumatic Grief.

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe active-alert hypnosis and identify clinical situations when this can be useful
2. Discuss conversational hypnosis and the use of an Attune, lift, and lead language pattern to build rapport, clarify client goals, and collaborate on hypnotic suggestions.
3. Demonstrate and practice conversational hypnosis in breakout group sessions using the Attune, Lift, and Lead language pattern.
4. Explain how to use metaphor and storytelling therapeutically
5. Practice utilizing client metaphors via the Breath-Symbol Imagery induction in breakout group practice session
6. Describe one age regression and age progression technique and when each could be used therapeutically
7. Demonstrate and practice one age regression & progression technique
8. Describe what is meant by abreaction in clinical hypnosis and distinguish between helpful vs. unhelpful examples of abreaction
9. Describe how to support a client who is experiencing abreaction and identify appropriate responses to helpful vs. unhelpful abreaction experiences
10. Demonstrate the use of ideomotor signaling for client communication and exploration
11. Practice eliciting ideomotor signals in breakout group sessions
12. Describe how to integrate clinical hypnosis with cognitive-behavioral techniques for reducing anxiety to improve client engagement and outcomes
13. Practice creating three hypnotic suggestions to reduce anxiety
14. Describe how hypnosis can be used to increase feelings of inner safety and ego-strengthening prior to trauma treatment.
15. Describe how to integrate hypnosis with cognitive-behavioral therapy, prolonged exposure therapy, EMDR, or other evidence-based treatments for trauma.
16. Review and critique a demonstration of the fast phobia protocol for reducing anxiety
17. Describe how hypnosis can be used to reduce anxiety and discomfort related to cancer treatment
18. Explain how hypnosis scan be used for pain management
19. Practice at least one hypnosis technique for reducing pain in small breakout groups
20. Discuss how hypnosis can be used to reduce insomnia
21. Discuss how hypnosis can be used as an adjunct to medical treatment to reduce anxiety and pain related to medical procedures and/or palliative care
22. Discuss how hypnosis can be used to support interventions for habit control and health promoting behaviors
23. Demonstrate and practice two clinical hypnosis techniques to address problem habits.
24. Discuss the ethical use of hypnosis as an adjunct to medical treatment and when clinical hypnosis would be contraindicated
25. Discuss requirements for certification in clinical hypnosis and resources for continuing professional development.
