Treatment for Stimulant Use Disorders: Medical Aspects of Stimulant Use Disorders
Course Description: This course is based on material published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and is available as an open-access article.
Healthcare service providers need to learn the medical signs, symptoms, and consequences of stimulant use to understand how best to medically manage patients with stimulant use disorders. Behavioral health service providers should also learn the medical aspects of stimulant use disorders so they can refer patients for medical intervention quickly and appropriately. The physical effects of stimulants will vary by the type of stimulant taken, route of administration, dose, purity of the substance, the individual’s pattern of use, other substances the individual may be using, and any medical or psychiatric comorbidities the individual may have. Common medical complications of stimulant use disorders are cardiovascular conditions, respiratory problems, cerebrovascular events, muscular and renal dysfunction, gastrointestinal problems, infections including HIV/AIDS, and hepatitis C. Common psychological complications of stimulant use disorders include psychosis, depression, hypervigilance, and anxiety. People with stimulant use disorders often have co-occurring conditions that, if untreated, can exacerbate their substance use or otherwise make recovery more difficult. Co-occurring conditions of note are polysubstance use, co- occurring mental illness, medical conditions, and traumatic injury.
This course on medical aspects of stimulant use disorders is designed for clinical social workers, psychologists, professional counselors, nurses, and substance abuse counselors who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their expertise with medical aspects of stimulant use disorders. The course material includes a literature review of research. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require continuing clinical education courses for license renewal.
The course is based on a journal article that includes research. It contains statistical analysis and data that some clinicians enjoy reading and others do not. A significant benefit of reading peer reviewed research-based articles for continuing education is that they provide practitioners with the latest findings in their field.
