Course Description:
This course is based on an article published by the National Institute of Aging: a division of the National Institute of Health. The publication can also be found on the National Institute of Aging website. The publication describes in detail the anatomy of the heart and how it changes with age. It goes on to detail the cellular clues to aging including how age lengthens action potential in the heart and how heart cavity pressure opposes aortic pressure. The article goes on to detail how blood vessels age, including the process of atherosclerosis, and implications for gene therapy in the treatment of heart problems. The article goes on to discuss new heart tests that may help to detect heart disease before it has caused serious permanent damage as well as ways to keep arteries and heart healthy for a lifetime.

This is a wonderfully written article. The authors take complex subject material and simplify it with the aid of beautiful visual graphics that serve to aid the reader in understanding the material. This course is an excellent reference for nurses and the mental health professional that works with the elderly. It is important for social workers, psychologists and professional counselors who work with the elderly to understand the biological processes that may impact functioning and ultimately mental health as well.
Nurses, social workers, psychologists, mental health counselors, and marriage and family therapists can benefit from this course on aging hearts and arteries. This course may also be helpful for dieticians and nutritionists who work with geriatric or elderly clients.
