Course Description: This course is based on material published by the National Academy of Science and is available as an open-access article.
Abstract: More than 67,000 people died from drug overdose in the United States in 2018, with opioids having accounted for more than 46,000 of those deaths. The COVID-19 pandemic has only increased death and overdose from opioid and other substance misuse across the country. Furthermore, at least 75 percent of people with a substance use disorder (SUD) began their substance use during childhood or adolescence. One potential strategy for preventing SUD is to provide family-focused, primary-prevention interventions in adolescence. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Board on Children, Youth, and Families convened a workshop that examined how such interventions have been used to address SUD in primary healthcare settings. The workshop considered barriers to and opportunities for implementing these interventions and highlighted existing policy efforts to incorporate these interventions into statewide healthcare strategies.
This course is based on the proceedings of a workshop on family-focused interventions to prevent substance use disorder in adolescents. It is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. In addition, this course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced-level practitioners who wish to enhance their skills in family-focused interventions, particularly ones that are designed to prevent substance use disorder. The course material includes a literature review of interventions and research. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require continuing clinical education courses for license renewal.
The course is based on a professional workshop summary that includes research. A significant benefit of reading research-based articles for continuing education is they provide practitioners with the latest findings in their field.
