On Demand – ACT and EMDR: Integrating Trauma Techniques
Recorded Webinar
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is an empirically based 8 Phase model of treating trauma related disorders. While EMDR using the Standard Protocol has well-established positive outcomes, many clinicians find they need more therapeutic skills to engage clients fully and effectively with the methodology. Clients require skills to be able to approach difficult material, remain mindfully engaged in the process, and to re-work coping skills that are no longer effective. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can aid clients in each of these areas.
ACT has also been found to be effective in the treatment of trauma-related disorders such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression and teaches many skills in innovative ways to help clients face processing difficult emotions and past trauma while encouraging clients to behave in ways that move them closer to meaningful lived experiences.
This workshop will provide a clear rationale for combining these methodologies while teaching specific skills to mindfully bring ACT into every EMDR session, no matter what phase of the treatment model is being worked on while maintaining integrity with the Standard Protocol.
Presenter Bio:
Dr. Travia has been working with clients who have experienced complex trauma for over 15 years using ACT and EMDR in a variety of settings. She spent almost 6 years treating active duty combat veterans in a military partial hospital setting, eventually leading the combat trauma “track” at that facility. While there, she maintained a small private practice focused on treating trauma before leaving 4+ years ago for full time private work. She has been trained in Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Graphic Narrative, ART, and EMDR and found that EMDR was by far the most well-tolerated and effective modality for the most complex clients. Using ACT with EMDR for the majority of clients has been a natural combination which she believes has helped clients heal more fully. ACT is also a methodology that encouraged good self-care and practicing what one teaches.
When she isn’t taking trainings, writing courses, and practicing therapy, she’s likely to be found playing cooperative board games with friends, attending theater productions, or SCUBA diving in port from a cruise ship.
Dr. Travia is a Licensed Psychologist in Virginia, Indiana, and Maryland, an EMDR Certified Clinician and Approved Consultant, and member of APIT (Authority to Practice Interjurisdictional Telepsychology) Granted by the PSYPACT Commission issued on 5/3/2021. Mobility # 7569. She is also a part of the National Register and member of the American Psychological Association. EC Provider #: 22027
