Trauma Informed Hypnotherapy Level 1: Foundational Skills

The Trauma Informed Hypnotherapy Level 1 course is an 8-week, multisession virtual course with both live and online self-study content designed to train mental health practitioners in basic clinical hypnosis techniques that can be used as an adjunct to evidence-based treatments for anxiety, pain mangagement, and trauma resolution.
Participants will gain competence in therapeutic uses of clinical hypnosis, modern theories of how clinical hypnosis works, utilize four different types of hypnotic inductions, create hypnotic suggestions to help clients reduce anxiety, relieve pain, and experience more positive emotional states. In addition, participants will gain competence in using hypnosis safely with clients who have experienced trauma.
Presenter Bio:
Courtney Armstrong, LPC is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in grief and trauma recovery. Known for her engaging teaching style, she has developed training programs for the Veterans Health Administration and has trained thousands of mental health professionals both nationally and internationally. She is the Founder of the Institute for Trauma Informed Hypnotherapy and the author of Transforming Traumatic Grief (2011), The Therapeutic “Aha!” (2015), and Rethinking Trauma Treatment: Attachment, Memory Reconsolidation and Resilience (2019).

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Discuss APA’s Division 30’s definition of clinical hypnosis and summarize two theories about how clinical hypnosis works.
- Explain five basic steps for eliciting hypnosis.
- Identify at least three observable signs of trance.
- Demonstrate at least two methods for safely reorienting a client from hypnosis.
- Discuss three methods for safely deepening hypnosis.
- Identify nine types of hypnotic phenomena and how they may be used therapeutically.
- Create and apply one direct hypnotic suggestion.
- Create and apply one metaphorical hypnotic suggestion.
- Create and apply one indirect hypnotic suggestion.
- Create and apply one post-hypnotic suggestion.
- Describe how hypnosis can be used as an adjunct to cognitive-behavioral techniques to reduce anxiety and increase feelings of calm, safety, and confidence in clients.
- Discuss how hypnosis can alter pain perception and describe evidence-based hypnosis techniques to reduce pain and increase physical comfort.
- State two recent neuroscience discoveries regarding memory reconsolidation and their clinical implications for treatment.
- Describe five steps an evidence-based imaginal rescripting technique to help clients reduce distress related to memories of trauma.
- Explain ethical standards for using clinical hypnosis in trauma treatment.
- Practice two rapid rapport building skills in small groups.
- Demonstrate how to introduce hypnosis to your clients.
- Apply a progressive muscle relaxation technique that can be used to reduce anxiety and pain intensity.
- Demonstrate a progressive muscle relaxation induction to ground and calm the nervous system.
- Apply one conversational hypnosis technique and one eyes-open elicitation technique.
- Utilize an imagery induction that help clients increase feelings of self-worth and self-compassion.
- Create two hypnotic suggestions that can be used to calm anxiety and increase feelings of inner safety.
- Apply one hypnosis techniques for creating a corrective emotional experience.
- Apply a 5-step imagery rescripting technique to reduce distress related to a painful memory.
- Apply two hypnotic techniques for relieving pain and befriending the body.
