Ethical Dilemmas Encountered by Members of APA
Course Description:
This course is based upon a research article by Kenneth S. Pope. It is different from many articles on ethics in our field in that it is based on sound research and reports actual incidences of ethical dilemmas. Pope used a random sample of over 1,300 members of the American Psychological Association (APA) to determine the incidence of ethical problems that they encountered. He asked the respondents to report incidents that had occurred in their practice that they considered to be ethically challenging. He then categorizes the types of dilemmas and provides multiple examples of responses he received. He comments on how this process was used to originally develop the APA Code of Ethics and makes recommendations for the process of refining and updating the current APA code of ethics.
The article provides a mental health professional with solid information regarding the nature and incidence of various types of ethical dilemmas that are encountered while practicing today.
