Trauma Informed Hypnotherapy Level 2: Techniques for Complex Trauma

The Trauma Informed Hypnotherapy Level 2 course is an 8-week, multisession virtual course with both live and online self-study content designed to train mental health practitioners in intermediate clinical hypnosis techniques that can be used as an adjunct to evidence-based treatments for complex trauma.
Participants will assess attachment and complex trauma; techniques for working with various attachment styles; how to manage dissociation and abreaction; how to utilize ideomotor signals for working through inner conflicts; techniques for reducing nightmares, insomnia, anxiety, pain, and techniques for breaking maladaptive habits. Limitations, contraindications, cultural considerations, and ethical use of clinical hypnosis will also be addressed.
Presenter Bio:
Courtney Armstrong, LPC is a licensed professional counselor who specializes in grief and trauma recovery. Known for her engaging teaching style, she has developed training programs for the Veterans Health Administration and has trained thousands of mental health professionals both nationally and internationally. She is the Founder of the Institute for Trauma Informed Hypnotherapy and the author of Transforming Traumatic Grief (2011), The Therapeutic “Aha!” (2015), and Rethinking Trauma Treatment: Attachment, Memory Reconsolidation and Resilience (2019).

- Describe how complex trauma can impact brain development and attachment behavior.
- Compare four primary attachment styles and identify techniques to build rapport with each style.
- Demonstrate three strategies to help clients with anxious attachment style develop skills to set boundaries, improve self-worth and reduce fears of abandonment.
- Demonstrate three strategies to help clients with avoidant-dismissive attachment style develop skills for improved emotional expression, self-compassion, and balance the need for control in relationships.
- Demonstrate three strategies to help clients with fearful-avoidant attachment style develop skills for managing social anxiety, dissociative episodes, and feelings of mistrust.
- Identify strategies for managing dissociation and containing negative abreactions while reviewing traumatic memories.
- Demonstrate how to use ideomotor signals to identify and explore subconscious conflicts blocking change.
- Demonstrate how to work with trauma related amnesia and fragmented memories.
- Demonstrate how to integrate hypnosis with imaginal exposure and imagery rehearsal to reduce anxiety and phobias.
- Demonstrate how to integrate hypnosis with imagery rehearsal and rescripting to to reduce nightmares.
- Demonstrate how to use hypnosis as an adjunct to treatment for trauma related pain, and traumatic medical diagnoses like cancer.
- Demonstrate two strategies to help clients break maladaptive habits and develop healthy habits.
- Demonstrate two strategies to reduce urges/cravings to enhance success with issues such as smoking cessation and weight management.
- Assess attachment style tendencies evidence-based instruments and interview skills.
- Create two or more hypnotic suggestions to increase a person’s sense of how to nurture, protect, and guide themselves.
- Create two or more hypnotic suggestions to reduce overly critical self-talk and increase one’s capacity for self-compassion and reassuring self-talk.
- Apply an ego-state hypnosis technique to explore the function of a symptom or behavior.
- Create three hypnotic suggestions to reduce anxiety and increase self-agency skills.
- Apply one technique for increasing motivation to change a habit.
- Apply one technique for reducing a craving or urge.
- Create three hypnotic suggestions to reduce pain and increase physical comfort.
