Ethical Challenges in Promoting the Implementation of Preventive Interventions
Course Description: As evidence-based prevention programs have multiplied and prevention scientists have taken on new roles as implementers, a range of ethical challenges has emerged that existing professional codes do not adequately address. This course draws on the findings of the Society for Prevention Research (SPR) Ethics Task Force, convened in 2015 and published in Prevention Science in 2018, to examine the ethical dilemmas that arise when behavioral health professionals are involved in delivering, adapting, disseminating, and implementing preventive interventions in community settings. The course addresses conflicts of interest, fidelity versus adaptation, social justice, confidentiality, equitable access to benefits, and the ethical responsibilities that arise when working with vulnerable and underserved populations.
Psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, drug and alcohol counselors, marriage and family therapists, and other licensed or certified behavioral health professionals can benefit from this course. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced-level practitioners who require continuing education for license renewal.

Learning Objectives: This course will provide professionals with detailed information about the ethical challenges that arise in preventive interventions in community settings. Specifically, after completing this course the practitioner will:
- Identify the categories of ethical dilemmas most commonly encountered when implementing evidence-based prevention programs.
- Describe the ethical principles from the APA and related frameworks to be used when prevention program priorities conflict with community, practitioner, or participant needs.
- Explain the SPR Task Forces recommendations for developing standards that promote social justice and ethical practice in prevention.
