This course is based upon material published in the World Report on Violence and Health and is available as an open-access article. Sexual violence occurs throughout the world. Although in most countries there has been little research conducted on the problem, available data suggest that in some countries nearly one in four women may experience sexual violence by an intimate partner, and up to one-third of adolescent girls report their first sexual experience as being forced. Sexual violence has a profound impact on physical and mental health. This course defines sexual violence, its forms, and contexts, and provides estimates of its incidence. The risk factors for sexual violence are discussed, as are the consequences of being sexually violated. The course then turns to consideration of preventive factors.
This course on sexual violence is designed for employees who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, and intermediate level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of sexual violence. The course material includes a review of preventive measures.
