Recorded Webinar
PART 1 -Stabilization & EMDR Preparation Strategies with Children
This workshop will address the overarching structure of the preparation phase with children with developmental and complex trauma. The multifactor model of preparation will be presented including creative and playful ways of increasing capacities in children before and in between trauma processing.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Identify different levels of preparation and stabilization with children with complex self-organization structures
- Describe strategies to increase capacities that will provide the foundation for the processing of traumatic memories
Part 2 -Working with Parents within an Attachment-EMDR Systematic Approach
The child’s stability and sense of safety is highly dependent upon the parent’s capacity to provide it. The work with the parents within the eight phases of EMDR treatment is pivotal. This two-hour workshop will provide an attachment-based systemic model to work with parents and children. It is full of practical and ready to use strategies that will impact the effectiveness and outcome of your therapeutic work. You will receive unique and innovative ideas that will help you structure a successful systemic-EMDR treatment during pandemic times.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Identify different levels of intervention with parents and caregivers that are interwoven within the eight phases of EMDR therapy.
- Describe strategies to increase parent’s mentalizing, relational, affect tolerance and self-regulation capacities
- Explain attachment-based play and other creative strategies to support parents and children during pandemic times.
PART 3-Working with Defenses, Parts & Resistance in Children During Initial Phases of EMDR Therapy
Children with complex and developmental trauma present with layers of trauma, adversity, attachment injuries and unmet needs. They are mixed and combined with entrenched defenses, trauma-related phobias and mechanisms of adaptations. These children self-organize internally to meet the demands of traumatizing and relationally impoverished environments. This presentation will provide EMDR clinicians with a clear theoretical framework along with specific and practical tools and strategies to explore and work with such entrenched defenses and phobias during the initial phases of treatment. Many EMDR clinicians may feel challenged and exhausted as they try to help these children heal. This workshop will give you a road map to be able to work with your complex cases.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Recall the theories that help us recognize defenses and phobia formation in complexly traumatized children.
- Identify strategies to explore defenses and phobias using play and EMDR strategies with children with complex trauma.
Part 4- Exploring & Processing Trauma Memories with Children within an EMDR Approach
Accessing and processing memories of trauma when phobias and defenses are present may be convoluted and challenging. As a result, many clinicians never or very slowly move toward trauma work. Children who have suffered early developmental trauma need the healing that trauma processing can offer. However, they may be the ones that have the greatest challenges and resistance to access such memories along with the cognitive, emotional, and somatic schemas contained within.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
- Select markers and criteria to establish the child’s readiness to move into trauma processing
- Identify playful strategies to explore and identify targets with children
Part 5 -The EMDR Interweave with Children: Blocked Processing & Integration
Information processing with children with chronic and developmental trauma may get blocked more often as they navigate through memory systems that contain entrenched defenses, rooted distortions, and truncated defenses. EMDR clinicians need to be well equipped with developmentally appropriate as well as child friendly interweaves and interventions to address an information processing system that stalls.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Explain child friendly interweaves that work directly with the attachment system to repair, mirror, validate, meet unmet needs, nurture and heal the little self and wounded parts
- Select interweaves that work with the body and the sensorimotor system and support the child in completing truncated defenses, modulate arousal, recalibrate the nervous system, challenge procedural memory, and execute empowering actions that could not be performed during the traumatic event
- Describe interweaves that challenge the window of tolerance as the child is invited to embrace exploration and risk while maintaining safety
