This research-based guide on drug addiction treatment discusses the scourge of drug abuse, describing it as a complex illness characterized by intense and often uncontrollable drug craving, along with compulsive drug seeking and use that persists even in the face of devastating consequences. This update of the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Principles of Addiction Treatment is intended to address addiction to a wide variety of drugs, including nicotine, alcohol, and illicit and prescription drugs. It is designed to serve as a resource for healthcare providers, family members, and other stakeholders trying to address the myriad problems faced by patients in need of treatment for drug abuse or addiction.
Covered topics include principles of effective treatment, frequently asked questions, drug addiction treatment in the United States, and evidence-based approaches to drug addiction treatment. Resources for all stakeholders are also presented.
This course on drug addiction treatment is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of the treatment of drug addiction. The course material includes a review of interventions. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
