This course is based upon material published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of the US Department of Health and Human Services and is available as an open-access article.
Americans are living longer, and the needs of the older population with serious mental illness (SMI) exceed the number of behavioral health professionals trained in geriatric care. The purpose of this course is to provide a broad-based overview of workforce issues to consider when addressing the needs of older adults living with SMI. The changing demographic of the aging population is discussed, as well as co-morbidities in this population, challenges faced by the provider workforce, and barriers to strengthening the geriatric mental health workforce. Finally, ideas to expand this workforce are presented.
This course on serious mental illness in the geriatric population is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning and intermediate level practitioners who wish to increase their knowledge of geriatric mental illness. The course material includes a review of provider concerns. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
