Course Description: This course provides a practical, compliance-focused examination of the federal confidentiality framework governing substance use disorder (SUD) treatment records. Drawing from the integrated analysis of 42 CFR Part 2 and the HIPAA Privacy Rule, participants will gain operational clarity on consent requirements, permitted disclosures, court orders and subpoenas, emergency exceptions, audit and research uses, electronic health record (EHR) safeguards, breach response, and redisclosure limitations.
Designed for psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, substance abuse counselors, administrators, and compliance officers. This course translates regulatory language into real-world workflows. Emphasis is placed on dual compliance, documentation standards, consent management, legal risk reduction, and maintaining patient trust while supporting safe care coordination.
This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced-level practitioners who work in substance abuse assessment or treatment. It is also a good resource for licensed therapists who need continuing education in ethics for license renewal.
