Course Description: This course provides behavioral health practitioners with a comprehensive foundation in the clinical interviewing intake process. Drawing on an open-access peer-reviewed teaching resource developed by licensed clinicians in psychology and social work, the course examines the two core tasks of the intake session: building rapport and collecting data. Practitioners will explore how to cultivate a therapeutic clinical attitude, practice cultural humility, manage practical aspects of intake setup, and approach interviewing as both a science and an art. The course also addresses data collection strategies including the tools of assessment, psychometric considerations such as reliability and validity, appropriate sources of intake data, and an evidence-based framework of topics to assess using the biopsychosocial model. Clinicians will leave the course with practical guidance and a set of key principles applicable across mental health, substance abuse, counseling, and social work settings.
This course on clinical interviewing skills for the intake process is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of clinical interviewing, rapport-building, and assessment practices during the initial client contact.
