Course Description: This course provides a template for recovery coaching and plan development. The recovery coach program is an intensive, community-based case management program for people who have entered an addiction treatment program or have been screened for treatment, but have been placed on a waiting list. The program is designed as an integrated component of comprehensive addiction treatment programs. The primary purpose of the recovery coach program is to help individuals in addiction treatment gain access to needed resources, services, or supports that will help them achieve recovery from their substance use disorder. Recovery coaches can help individuals address multiple domains in their lives that have been impacted by their SUD, transition throughout the continuum of addiction treatment, and sustain recovery after the formal addiction treatment component has been completed. This course provides an introduction to the recovery coach program, and discusses structural aspects of implementing such a program, considerations for training and supervising coaches, the integration of recovery coaches with addiction treatment services, engagement of clients in the program, the creation of strengths-based recovery plans, expansion of recovery capital, and behavioral problem-solving.
This course is based upon material published by the Illinois Department of Human Services Department of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse and is available as an open access article.
This course on recovery coaching and personal recovery plan development is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work.
