Course Description:

This brief provides guidance for assisting clients in taking achievable steps toward their healthy living goals.  It presents practical, time-limited examples of how to raise awareness, enhance client self-management, encourage action based on strengths, and document change.  The dangers of unhealthy eating are presented, including not only obesity, but also specific psychiatric disorders tied to weight issues.  The brief includes a discussion of weight measurement techniques including BMI and waist circumference.  Strategies are presented, including approaching a weight management discussion, assessing healthy eating and physical activity, assisting clients in developing achievable goals, and providing follow-up. This course is based upon material published in a Provider Action Brief from the SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions and is available as an open access article.

This course on supporting clients in making healthy food choices and increasing physical activity is designed for peer support counselors and paraprofessionals who want to work in substance abuse treatment. This course is appropriate for entry level and beginning practitioners.
