Course Description:

This course reviews the policy statement of The Society of Community Research and Action on the value of recovery residences in the United States.  This policy was developed in consultation with the executive, advocacy and research committees of the National Association of Recovery Residences (NARR).  After a review of the emergence and rapid growth of recovery residences as a new addiction recovery support institution, the course highlights research to date on the positive effects of participation in a recovery residence on long-term addiction recovery and related outcomes.  The policy champions a research agenda that would address many unanswered questions related to the participation of recovery residences along the recovery continuum and advocates social policies in which these residences may flourish.  Furthermore, the policy supports programs of education and training to increase referrals to recovery residences by health and human services professionals and promotes programs to educate local political leaders and the public about the value of recovery residences for individuals, families, and communities in the United States.  This course is based upon material published in the American Journal of Community Psychology and is available as an open access article.

This course on the role of recovery residences in promoting long-term addiction recovery is designed for substance abuse counselors and recovery residence administrators.  Practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of long-term addiction recovery through the use of recovery residences. The course material includes a discussion of the policy statement from the Society of Community Research and Action regarding the role of recovery residences in promoting long-term addiction recovery.
