General Effective Communication Requirements under Title II of the ADA

Course Description:

This ADA Best Practices Tool Kit for State and Local Governments discusses the requirements of Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act for effective communication with those who have communication barriers.  It defines effective communication and auxiliary aids and services, emphasizing when state and local governments are required to provide these auxiliary aids and services, as well as who gets to choose which aid or service will be provided.  The course concludes with suggestions to assist state and local governments in planning ahead to provide effective communication.

 

This course is based upon material published online by the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice and is available as an open access article.

 

This course on communication best practices under Title II of the ADA is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors.  This course is appropriate for beginning level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of best practices for communicating with those who have barriers under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The course material comprises one chapter of the ADA Tool Kit issued by the US Department of Justice.
