Intimate Partner Violence and Sexual Abuse among LGBT People
Course Description:
This course provides an overview of existing research on intimate partner violence and sexual abuse among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and makes recommendations for future research. Over 40 studies from 1989 to the present were reviewed to provide the reader with findings on the prevalence of IPV and IPSA, survivor barriers to seeking help, and the quality of available assistance for LGBT people. This course is based upon material published by the Williams Institute at the University of California School of Law and is available as an open access article.
This course on intimate partner violence and sexual abuse among LGBT people is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of sexual abuse and intimate partner violence in the LGBT community. The course material includes a literature review of prevalence, survivor barriers to seeking help, and the quality of available assistance for LGBT people. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require continuing education courses for license renewal.
The course is based on a journal article which includes research. It contains statistical analysis and data that some clinicians enjoy reading and others do not. A major benefit of reading research-based articles for continuing education is they provide practitioners with the latest findings in their field.
