Course Description:
This course reviews the neurobiological processes that define adolescence and influence risk-taking, and the role they play as a key factor in adolescent behavior. These topics inform understanding teens in the context of psychological development and social influences. An overview of psychosocial development and adolescent risk-taking is provided, followed by an exploration of recent research on reasoning and decision-making as it applies to adolescent risk-taking.
This course is based upon material published in the workshop report from The Science of Adolescent Risk-Taking and is available as an open access article.
This course on risk-taking during adolescence is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of adolescent risk-taking. The course material includes a review of research into reasoning and decision-making as applied to adolescent risk-taking. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
