Course Description: Ethics and Professional Practice for Marriage and Family Therapists
This course provides marriage and family therapists and other behavioral health professionals with a thorough review of the revised AAMFT Code of Ethics, effective January 1, 2026. Participants will examine the nine ethical standards that govern professional practice, including responsibility to clients, confidentiality, professional competence and integrity, responsibility to students and supervisees, research and publication, technology-assisted services, professional services within the legal system, financial arrangements, and advertising. The course emphasizes the distinction between aspirational core values and enforceable ethical standards, and addresses common areas of ethical risk including multiple relationships, informed consent, dual roles in legal proceedings, and the ethical use of technology.
This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced-level practitioners who wish to learn more about the AAMFT Code of Ethics and professional ethical obligations in marriage and family therapy practice. It is also a good resource for licensed therapists who need continuing education in ethics for license renewal.
