Course Description:
The course begins with an overview and definition of both mental illness and addiction and goes on to describe the prevalence of co-occurring disorders. Common factors in co-morbidity are also reviewed. Changes in the brain through development are reviewed, as well as how co-occurring disorders are diagnosed and treated. The course goes on to review common definitions and terms in some detail. Screening, assessment and treatment planning for clients with co-occurring disorders is then discussed. Lastly, the overarching principles utilized to address the needs of persons with co-occurring disorders is covered. This course is based upon material published by SAMHSA and is in the public domain.
This course on co-occurring disorders is designed for peer support counselors, recovery residence administrators, substance abuse counselors, and paraprofessionals who want to work in substance abuse treatment. This course is appropriate for entry and beginning level practitioners.
