Internet Treatment for PTSD

Course Description: This course is based on a journal article entitled “Internet-based treatment for PTSD reduces distress and facilitates the development of a strong therapeutic alliance: a randomized controlled clinical trial”, by Christine Knaevelsrud and Andreas Maercker, published by BMC Psychiatry, 7:13. The article can also be found on the BioMed Central website. This article describes a study that was designed to evaluate the efficacy of an internet-based therapy ( which the authors call Interapy) for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The article conclusion states “Interapy proved to be a viable treatment alternative for PTSD with large effect sizes and sustained treatment effects. A stable and positive online therapeutic relationship can be established through the Internet which improved during the treatment process.”
This article is very timely and reflects the changing nature of our world and has implications of how our profession may function in the future. This publication is an excellent article for the mental health professional, especially for professionals who are fluent in the use the internet. Social workers, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists and certified addiction professionals can benefit from this course. This course may also be helpful for midwives, dieticians and nutritionists who work with a wide array of clients and who may encounter clients who have post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This course is appropriate for beginning and intermediate level practitioners who wish to develop their clinical skills using the internet.
