Course Description: This course is based upon material published in Marquette University and is available as an open access article.
In the field of mental health professions, clinical supervision was seen as an apprenticeship. A master/apprentice relationship would give way for clinicians who have mastered their field to be competent enough to supervise those not as skilled or proficient. However, this induces a sense of hierarchy that is not supported in today’s viewpoint on supervision. Furthermore, a master clinician may not always be a master supervisor without knowledge or training on the subject. Although it is helpful for a supervisee to observe a more experienced clinician at work, it is not sufficient for acquiring those skills themselves. It is important to let the supervisee participate and reflect on the work being done and the relationship being built in addition to the supervision being given. For this reason, supervision is now seen as a complex ordeal explained through models for a better understanding. This article highlights information and models gathered from different authors on the topic of supervision. Many have failed short while others have proven their efficacy and success in various situations.
This course on supervision models is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who supervise interns or other therapists. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of supervision. The course material includes a literature review of supervision models. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
