Tobacco Free: A Toolkit for Healthcare Providers
Course Description: This course is based upon material published by the Behavioral Health and Wellness Program of the University of Colorado, Anshutz School of Medicine and is available as an open access toolkit for healthcare providers.
Introduction: Although healthcare providers are aware of the negative effects of tobacco use, they do not always view themselves as the agents of change to assist in ending tobacco use. Healthcare settings, especially primary care, can have a significant impact on helping individuals to avoid or reduce chronic illness through increased attention to tobacco cessation. Despite individuals desire to quit, unaided quit attempts have poor outcomes. In some studies, as high as 62 percent of individuals who try to quit alone relapse within two weeks. Clinical providers can play a significant role in helping patients quit. This toolkit is designed for a broad continuum of healthcare providers. Materials are intended for direct providers, as well as administrators and healthcare organizations. How do I use this toolkit? The toolkit contains a variety of information and step-by-step instructions about: 1- Education about tobacco use; 2- Skills for engaging individuals in tobacco cessation discussions; 3- Efficient methods for assessing peoples readiness to quit; and 4- Information and research on treatments.
This course on treating tobacco addiction is designed for substance abuse counselors, social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and other healthcare providers, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of substance abuse treatment. The course material includes a review of what is known about smoking. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
