Course Description: This course provides an in-depth examination of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Criteria, 4th Edition, including its historical development, foundational principles, and clinical application. Participants will explore the six-dimensional assessment framework used to evaluate severity of illness and level of function in clients with substance use and co-occurring conditions. The course covers ASAMs multidimensional approach to service planning, placement decisions, continued stay criteria, and discharge planning. Special attention is given to the major changes introduced in the 4th Edition, including a shift from placement criteria to treatment criteria, updates to withdrawal management, integration of adolescent content, and terminology revisions reflecting contemporary, strengths-based, and recovery-oriented language.
This course on the ASAM Criteria is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of ASAM assessment, levels of care, and treatment planning for substance use and co-occurring conditions. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
