Course Description: Workplace fires are a leading cause of occupational injury and death in the United States, yet the majority are preventable with proper training and awareness. This course provides licensed clinicians and healthcare professionals with a thorough grounding in workplace fire safety, covering the science of fire, common causes of workplace fires, and individual responsibilities in fire prevention. Participants will learn the R.A.C.E. fire response procedure, the P.A.S.S. extinguisher technique, and how to identify and correctly use the appropriate type of fire extinguisher for different classes of fire. The course also addresses what to do when caught in a fire or smoke-filled environment, how to safely evacuate — including considerations for patients and individuals with mobility limitations — and the regulatory requirements that govern fire safety in healthcare and other workplace settings.

This course on fire safety is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of fire safety in the workplace. It may also be useful for staff training.

Authors: CE-Classes

  1. Identify the three components of the fire triangle and explain how removing any one element extinguishes fire.
  2. Describe the steps of the R.A.C.E. fire response procedure and the P.A.S.S. technique for extinguisher use.
  3. Select appropriate actions for surviving a fire, evacuating a building, and supporting individuals with mobility needs.
