total earned credit = +

Course Description:

According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Psychology in California, psychologists are required to self-certify that they have kept abreast of changes to the laws and rules in California. Specifically, the board website states:

Under the current regulations, there is no hour requirement or certificate required for Laws & Ethics. Licensees must check a box self-certifying that they have kept abreast of changes to laws (statutes and regulations) and ethics.

This course is specifically designed to meet this requirement.  This course is a review of both ethics and law regarding the practice of psychology in California.  The material for this course comes from multiple sources including the American Psychological Association (APA) and the California Board of Psychology.

This first part of this course is a review of the American Psychological Association, APA, Code of Conduct.  This course is a review of the American Psychological Association, APA, Code of Conduct.  Adopted in 2002, with the 2016 Amendment to standard 3.04 which is effective as of January 1, 2017.  This Ethics Code applies to psychologists’ activities that are part of their scientific, educational, and professional roles as a psychologist.  Remember the core ethical principals and standards of practice for psychology.  You probably have not reviewed the Code of Ethics since graduate school.  Read the APA’s Code of Ethics for a review of the foundations of our field.

The second article. published on the APA – American Psychological Association website, is about ethics for psychologists and other healthcare professionals. It is a short summary of the frequent ethical problems that are encountered by practicing psychologists and therapists, as well as other healthcare professionals, with guidelines for avoiding problems. It is full of practical tips on how to avoid common ethical dilemmas.

The third part of this course comes from the California Board of Psychology.  The document highlights California’s Laws and Regulations Changes Relating to the Practice of Psychology.  This has been extracted from the latest edition provided by the Board, and incorporates the 2019 to 2020 legislative enactments and updates.

This course will remind you of the core principles that should guide all clinical practice, regardless of setting and client population. It is targeted for beginner, intermediate and advanced psychologists. It is also appropriate for mental health professionals from other disciplines, such as social workers, mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists who are interested in another perspective on ethics.

The questions for the exam follow the order of the material that is provided.  The first 18 questions are on the APA code of Ethics .  Questions 19-30  are based on the second article. Questions 31-39  are based on the third article.

Learning Objectives: This course will provide a psychologist with a review of the APA code of ethics, including recent updates.  In addition, this course provides a review of recent changes to California law as it applies to psychologists.   Specifically, a psychologist will able to:

  • Identify updates in the APA code of ethics
  • Summarize the ethical standards to which psychologists’ work must adhere
  • Identify California law regarding the practice of psychology
  • Describe changes in the law that apply to licensed psychologists
