ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to provide a review of interventions that have been implemented in the social work, mental health counseling, and other helping professions to promote positive attitude change toward individuals with disabilities. The review specifically examines empirical research literature about attempts at attitude change toward individuals with a visible disability, such as a physical impairment, as they are more easily identified as “disabled.” It is written with a particular focus on attitudes of social workers given the profession’s emphasis on cultural competence and advocating for oppressed groups, from the perspective that individuals with disabilities constitute a cultural minority group with a long history of disenfranchisement. Results highlight the need for continued development of educational curricula aimed at disability attitude change, as well as effective interventions to change the attitudes of social workers and other helping professionals toward individuals with disabilities.
This course on attitude change toward individuals with disabilities is designed for social workers, psychologists, nurses, and professional counselors who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop their understanding of attitude change and how to implement it. The course material includes a literature review of interventions. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.
