Course Description:
This continuing education course examines the principles and application of primary prevention in addressing intimate partner violence and abuse (IPVA). Drawing from public health frameworks, participants will explore the prevention continuum, the socioecological model, the role of social norms, and the Spectrum of Prevention. The course emphasizes environmental and systems-level change, organizational practices, policy advocacy, and the critical role healthcare professionals play in shifting norms and preventing violence before it occurs.
This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced-level practitioners who wish to learn more about domestic violence. It is also a good resource for licensed therapists who need domestic violence continuing education for license renewal.
Authors: Cohen, Davis, and Graffunder
Learning Objectives: This course will provide a professional with detailed information about domestic violence. Specifically, the practitioner will:
- Differentiate between primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention as applied to intimate partner violence.
- Explain the role of social norms and the socioecological model in contributing to or preventing intimate partner violence.
- Identify at least three strategies healthcare professionals can implement to support primary prevention efforts.
