Course Description: Child abuse and neglect remain among the most serious public health concerns in the United States. This course examines the national landscape of child maltreatment using data from the 35th edition of the Childrens Bureaus Child Maltreatment 2024 report, the most current federal data available. It covers the federal legislative framework governing child protection, including the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) and the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS). The course explores how child protective services agencies receive, screen, and respond to reports of maltreatment, and presents current national data on victim demographics, maltreatment types, caregiver risk factors, perpetrator characteristics, child fatalities, and the services provided to children and families following CPS involvement. Emphasis is placed on patterns of racial and age-related disparity, the role of mandated reporters, and the clinical implications of current data for behavioral health professionals.
This course on child abuse and neglect is designed for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, and substance abuse counselors, who do clinical work. This course is appropriate for intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop or increase their knowledge of child maltreatment, child protective services systems, and evidence-based approaches to identifying and responding to abuse and neglect. It may also be useful for licensed clinicians who require clinical continuing education courses for license renewal.

Learning Objectives: This course will provide a professional with detailed information about child abuse and neglect in the United States. Specifically, the practitioner will:
- Distinguish between federal and state definitions of child abuse and neglect as established by the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA).

- Identify current national patterns in child victim demographics and maltreatment types.
