Course Description:
This course is based upon material published in the journal Criminal Justice and Behavior by Sage Publications on behalf of the International Association for Correctional and Forensic Psychology IACFP. This course, including the continuing education credits are offered free of charge as a benefit to all IACFP members.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate how affect and impulsiveness characterize specific forms of sexual violence. Thirty-two men convicted for rape, 31 men convicted for child sexual abuse (study 1), and 37 male students reporting sexual violence against women (study 2) were assessed according to the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule and the Barrat Impulsiveness Scale. Results (study 1) indicated that negative affect and motor/planning impulsiveness characterized individuals convicted for rape with regard to controls, whereas child sexual molesters presented significantly lower positive affect than controls. On the other hand, students reporting sexual violence against women (study 2) presented higher motor/planning and cognitive impulsiveness than the control peers, but did not differ from peers in relation to affect. Data suggested that the three forms of sexual violence (rape, child sexual abuse, and sexual coercion among college students) may be related to different etiological pathways.
Forensic and clinical psychologists can benefit from this course.
