Course Description: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) presents complex challenges for behavioral health professionals that extend beyond clinical treatment. Practitioners must understand ethical principles, legal requirements, and confidentiality protections when working with individuals affected by alcohol misuse. In addition to clinical care, professionals must navigate issues such as informed consent, duty of care, documentation, and client rights within the framework of federal and state laws.
This course examines the ethical and legal considerations involved in the prevention and treatment of alcohol use disorders. Participants will review foundational ethical principles guiding behavioral health practice. The course also explores legal frameworks such as HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2, which provide enhanced confidentiality protections for individuals receiving substance use disorder treatment.
Additional topics include informed consent procedures, professional responsibilities, evidence-based treatment interventions, medication-assisted treatment, cultural competence, telehealth considerations, and risk management strategies.
This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate, and advanced-level practitioners who wish to learn more about legal and ethical issues in substance use assessment and treatment. It is also a good resource for licensed therapists who need continuing education in ethics for license renewal.
