Positive Reappraisal as a Treatment for Stressful Events in Adolescents
Course Description:
This course is based upon a journal article from the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology that describes in detail an effective treatment for adolescents who have experienced a stressful event. It compares the effectiveness of multiple cognitive restructuring interventions. Experimentally induced rumination, positive reappraisal, acceptance and distancing are all evaluated in this clinical study involving 160 adolescent participants.
The article begins with a brief but complete review of relevant research literature regarding these cognitive interventions. The study methodology is well described as are the instruments used to measure the important constructs, namely stress reactive rumination, affect states, and depressive symptoms. Results of the study are described in detail including general findings and qualitative and quantitative manipulation checks. Treatment effects are described in detail.
This article describes clinical research, and if you do not like reading research, you may not like the course material. However, empirically effective treatments are an important way to improve your clinical practice and the strategies and interventions described in this study are found to be significantly effective.
