Child Abuse Assessment – 7 hours
Course Description:
This material is designed to fulfill the 7 hour Child Abuse Assessment coursework that is now required for California LEP’s who renew their licenses.
The course is based on the manual, The Role of First Responders in Child Maltreatment Cases: Disaster and Nondisaster Situations, whose stated purpose is for those professionals who have the primary responsibility for the initial on-scene response to situations in which child abuse or neglect may have occurred, even when the initial call may be for another situation, such as domestic violence or a drug offense.
While Licensed Educational Psychologists and other Mental Health Care workers are not typically first responders, new requirements in California law indicate that these individuals may be the first professionals to have contact with victims and should, therefore, be educated in assessment techniques. This manual is designed to be a practical guide to help those in the field and includes step-by-step guidelines for assessing child abuse and maltreatment.
This is an informative article that is at times disturbing and upsetting. The authors take the subject material and simplify it with the aid of graphs and diagrams that serve to aid the reader in understanding the material.
Licensed educational psychologists, psychologists, social workers, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists nurses and other health care professionals can benefit from this course on working with the courts. This course is appropriate for beginning, intermediate and advanced level practitioners who wish to develop the knowledge base in the area assessing child abuse and maltreatment.

Learning Objectives: This course will provide the practitioner with detailed information regarding guidelines for assessing child abuse and maltreatment. Specifically, a professional will:

· Distinguish physical abuse from non-intentional injuries and folk medicine practices.
· Identify the specific steps in assessing child abuse and maltreatment.
· Identify situations in which child abuse and maltreatment should be assessed even when it was not the reason for the assessment.
