Approximately 70% of the world’s population have been exposed to a traumatic life event (Kessler et al., 2017), with a widespread impact on individuals’ health and wellbeing. The important take-home message for clinicians is that recovery from trauma symptoms is possible and offering the evidence-based treatment interventions available to us gives us a great chance of helping people heal from the worst experiences of their lives. That is powerful and rewarding work!

Through this training intensive, we will review gold-standard treatment interventions for PTSD, focusing on Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure Therapy. We will actively engage in in-depth case conceptualization for complex presentations and discuss ways to bring the art of providing quality therapy services within the science of evidence-based care. Training days will involve a combination of didactic instruction, collaborative discussions of case examples and skills demonstrations. You will walk away from the training with an enthusiasm for trauma treatment and applied ideas of how to best individualize evidence-based practices for your clients’ specific needs.

Developmental history and previous trauma exposure inform present trauma response and inform clinical practice

Excessive avoidance and unhealthy beliefs maintain PTSD

Evidence-based treatment approaches of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) and Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE) effectively addresses avoidance and maladaptive beliefs

PTSD often co-occurs with substance use as a form of maladaptive coping

Concurrent Treatment of PTSD and Substance Use Disorders Using Prolonged Exposure (COPE) is an effective adaptation of PE to treat comorbid PTSD and SUD.

Practitioners can make selective adaptations while staying within the evidence-based spirit of the protocols.
