We offer the Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certificate Programs for those who want to prepare to become a substance abuse counselor. We also provide continuing education units for drug counselors who are already certified.

Certified alcohol and drug counselors work within an array of settings, such as outpatient/residential drug treatment centers, hospitals, colleges, churches, and government agencies. If you ever dreamed of being in the helping field, now is the time!

Substance abuse is a chronic and widespread problem in our society that affects people of all ages and from all walks of life. People who struggle with substance abuse and other addictions often lose control of their jobs, relationships and their lives.

CERTIFICATE IN ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELING:

The Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certificate Program consists of 7 modules of instruction, plus 45 hours of supervised practicum and minimum of 255 hours of on-site clinical instruction designed around your schedule.

Certified Addiction Counselor Certificate (for CAADAC in California) is specifically designed to meet the educational requirements for drug counselor certification in the state of California.  Each course is focused on required content as specified by the 12 Core functions as required by state regulations and International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC & RC) standards. 

This certificate program consists of 6 fully online courses of 45 hours each.  In addition, a supervised practicum and field work internship is required for this certificate.  The course work for the practicum is a 45 hour course, and the internship requires a minimum of 252 hours (21 hours for each core function) and 3 hours for agency orientation (total 300 hours).  All of the required courses and the field internship must be completed in order to earn the certificate.

Certified Addiction Counselor Certificate Requirements:

SAC 101 Introduction to Substance Abuse Counseling
SAC 102 Physiology and Pharmacology of Alcohol and Other Drugs
SAC 103 Ethics and Legal Issues in Substance Abuse
SAC 104 Case Management in Substance Abuse Treatment
SAC 105 Professional Development for the Addictions Professional
SAC 106 Counseling Modes and Methods in Substance Abuse Treatment
SAC 107 Supervised Practicum in Substance Abuse Counseling (Concurrent with Field Internship)

Each course consists of 45 credits (or classroom hours).  Pre-requisites for SAC 107 include: SAC 101, SAC 102, SAC 103, SAC 104, SAC 105, and SAC 106.  Students are also required to have a site for their field internship before beginning SAC 107.

Nearly all of the required books for the courses are sources for the licensing exam administered by the IC & RC.  Students are strongly encouraged to keep all of their required and recommended reading materials for exam preparation.
