Course Description:
This course, based on a publication written by Beth Philley, M.A., describes in detail stress responses as well as other reactions to sexual trauma. The article begins with an overview of the incidence of sexual abuse and non-sexual abuse trauma and goes on to outline the psychological impact of childhood sexual abuse, adult sexual assault and other traumas. PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and DID (dissociative identity disorder), common diagnosis that are associated with a history of trauma are also reviewed. The article includes strategies for interventions, both by the survivors and clinicians working with the survivors. Specific counseling techniques for working with sexual abuse trauma victims are also discussed.
