Course Description

This Part II Training is a 20-hour course of study, over 3 days, employing the Part II Training Manual authored by Francine Shapiro and published by the EMDR Institute.
The workshop begins with an overview of the training, a review of the EMDR approach, the Adaptive Information Processing Model, and practice skills associated with the eight phases of EMDR treatment. These include Client History, Client Preparation, Assessment (structured accessing and measures of target memory), Desensitization (reprocessing the target memory network), Installation, Body Scan, Closure, and Reevaluation.
The entire training is devoted to lectures in the morning and practica in the afternoons. Each practicum session is conducted by a facilitator working with small groups of participants. Part II training is necessary for the full therapeutic utilization and understanding of the myriad applications of EMDR. It is recommended that a minimum of 20 – 30 sessions using EMDR be completed before registering for part 2.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe 3 strategies to identify and effectively resolve problem areas in the utilization of EMDR therapy
  • Identify 2 internal and external resources that clients need to have in place
  • Identify 2 clinical situations where EMD would be appropriate as an intervention
  • Distinguish between EMD and the EMDR Standard Protocol
  • Distinguish between adult-onset trauma and developmental trauma
  • Identify when you would target an adult-onset trauma versus applying the Standard Protocol
  • Describe 2 clinical symptoms that may indicate the need to assess for dissociation
  • Describe the 3 categories of negative cognitions: appropriate responsibility, safety, and control
  • List an example of a specific negative cognition in each of the categories of appropriate responsibility, safety and control
  • Describe the procedural steps for closing incomplete sessions
  • Describe the protocol to initiate an incomplete session for processing to resolution
  • Describe 1 therapy-interfering behavior to be addressed in order for treatment to proceed
  • Describe a treatment plan to choose and prioritize targets appropriate for EMDR treatment
  • Describe 3 strategies for dealing with highly emotional responses
  • Describe 3 strategies for dealing with dissociative symptoms
  • Distinguish between a simple phobia and a process phobia
  • Describe 3 cautions for using EMDR with addictions and compulsions
  • Identify 1 category of memory appropriate for targeting with combat veterans
  • Describe 3 strategies to treat more complex trauma-related disorders
  • Describe 3 ways that EMDR therapy adapts to provide culturally aware and competent treatment
