Agate Institute: LIVE – EMDR Child, Complex Trauma & Dissociation Specialist Intensive Program Presented by Ana Gomez

In this intensive EMDR child, complex trauma & dissociation specialist you will be provided with 8 hours of online training where you will receive an in depth coverage and review of the latest literature and research on complex trauma and dissociation in children. Multiple models and theories will be reviwed such as: Attachment theory, Liotti’s model od dissociation, Peritraumatic dissociation model, Descrere behavioral states (Putnam), Interpersonal neurobiology (Siegel), Internal Family Systems (IFS), the structural dissociation theory and many other models that address the etiology and development of dissociation in children. Assessment tools, differential diagnosis and clinical interview tools for children with dissociative tendencies will be covered. Following these 8 hours, you will attend an intensive-week long training where you can learn advance skills with children with attachment wounds, dissociative tendencies and structural dissociation. Multiple strategies and advanced protocolos will be provided to work with children with mild to moderate dissociative symptoms as well as children with structural dissociation.
The first part of this intensive program is dedicated to children with complex-developmental trauma that have attained an integrated sense of self. The second part, will be dedicated to children and adolescents presenting with failures of integration, fragmentation and division in their sense of self and emerging personality, and diagnosis such us DID or OSDD. How to work with “parts” and “dissoiciative parts” within the EMDR eight-phase model will be addressed. A thorough hands on approach is used, as Ana Gomez will walk participants through the eight phases of EMDR therapy with children with complex clinical presentations, dissociative tendencies and structural dissociation.
Ana M. Gómez, MC, LPC, is a psychotherapist in private practice and a national and international speaker on the use of EMDR therapy and other adjunct approaches with children and adolescents with complex trauma, attachment injuries, and dissociation. Ana was the recipient of the 2011 “Distinguished Service Award” from the Arizona Play Therapy Association and the 2012 Sierra Tucson “Hope Award.” She is a trainer of trainers for the EMDR Institute and EMDR-IBA, and she is the founder and director of the Agate Institute in Phoenix. Ana is the author of Dark, Bad Day Go Away: A Book for Children about Trauma and EMDR Therapy, the Thoughts Kit for Kids, Stories and Storytellers, the Thinking Mind, the Heart, and the Body: A Book for Children about Healing and EMDR Therapy and the co-author of All the Colors of Me: My First Book about Dissociation. She has also authored several chapters in books on the use of EMDR therapy with children. Her latest book is EMDR Therapy and Adjunct Approaches with Children: Complex Trauma, Attachment, and Dissociation. Ana has also developed several programs and protocols, such as the EMDR-Sandtray protocol and an attachment-informed EMDR program for parents and children to heal intergenerational trauma.

- Participants will be able to cite current research and literature on complex PTSD, attachment and dissociation in children.
- Participants will be able to develop strategies to create the clinical landscape using the three pronged approach for children exhibiting complex trauma, insecure patterns of attachment and dissociative symptoms.
- Participants will be able to cite key factors when establishing the client’s readiness for EMDR treatment.
- Participants will be able to recognize and identify signs of dissociation in children.
- Participants will be able to use instruments and tools available to assess dissociative symptoms and attachment patterns in children.
- Participants will be able to identify resources for stabilization and affect regulation that are suitable for children.
- Participants will be able to use scales and tools to measure how present children are, as well as restore dual attentions when lost such as:The “Fanometer”, the use of string puppet and more.The use of olfactory stimulation to restore dual attention.The use of “the dissociation kit for kids”
- Participants will be able to discuss strategies associated with the use of EMDR and structural dissociation theory with children.
- Participants will be able to describe strategies to increase children’s capacity for affect regulation such as: Pendulation, Orientation to present safety (Forgash, 2008, Knipe, 2008), Orientation to present resolution.
- Participants will be able to use strategies to identify parts using child friendly strategies.
- Participants will be able to use strategies to resource and stabilize parts.
- Participants will be able to utilize strategies to increase co- consciousness among parts as well as to improve parts’ regulatory capacities.
- Participants will be able to use strategies help children identify mechanisms of adaptation.
- Participants will be able to identify trauma related phobias with children and talk to them about phobias.
- Participants will be able to use strategies to address and reduce trauma related phobias.
- Participants will be able to use interweaves that work with the body and the sensorimotor system to keep children within manageable and tolerable levels of activation to facilitate the reprocessing of traumatic material.
- Participants will be able to use interweaves that work with the cognitive system.
- Participants will be able to use interweaves that work with emotional system.
- Participants will be able to use interweaves that work with the attachment system and work with caregivers so they can provide interweaves that meet unmet needs.
- Participants will be able to utilize various ways of using EMD and EMDr strategies.
- Participants will be able to use protocols similar to recent event protocols with complex trauma cases and memories that are highly charged and may be too big for children with a small window of affect tolerance.
