Agate Institute: Pre Course – EMDR Sandtray Specialist Intensive Program Presented by Ana Gomez
The nine-hour online training and the intensive 40-hour retreat is done in an intimate setting with a limited number of attendees. This training will teach the EMDR-Sandtray protocol in depth and thoroughly. You will receive 9 hours of online training where you will first be guided in creating your own sand tray miniature collection. You will learn about Sand play and Sand tray therapy history as well as the difference between the EMDR-Sandtray protocol and other therapies using sand tray. In addition, clinicians will learn basic principles of ego state theory, Internal Family Systems as well as the structural dissociation theory. Following these 8 hours, you will attend an intensive-week long training where you can practice and receive feedback directly from Ana Gomez the developer of the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol. This training covers in great depth the eight phases of EMDR therapy with children and adolescents and the use of the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol. This is especially useful for children that present with dysregulation of the affective system and require greater distance from the traumatic material. In addition, children that use a number of mechanisms of adaptation such as avoidance can highly benefit from using this protocol. The EMDR-Sandtray protocol offers various levels of distance from the traumatic material: The actual memory of trauma where the self is present in the story, to the general story/world where the self is absent. One of the wonderful assets of sand tray therapy is its capacity to access implicit and right hemisphere material through the use of stories, symbols and archetypes. It is not necessary to have the formal training in sand tray or Sandplay therapy as this protocol has its own procedures and principles rooted within the AIP model. A thorough hands on approach is used, as Ana Gomez will provide individualized support and guidance as you practice in small groups the use of the EMDR-Sandtray Protocol. Once you complete the program, you will receive a certificate given by the AGATE Institute and you will be in our website as a referral source.
Ana M. Gómez, MC, LPC, is a psychotherapist in private practice and a national and international speaker on the use of EMDR therapy and other adjunct approaches with children and adolescents with complex trauma, attachment injuries, and dissociation. Ana was the recipient of the 2011 “Distinguished Service Award” from the Arizona Play Therapy Association and the 2012 Sierra Tucson “Hope Award.” She is a trainer of trainers for the EMDR Institute and EMDR-IBA, and she is the founder and director of the Agate Institute in Phoenix. Ana is the author of Dark, Bad Day Go Away: A Book for Children about Trauma and EMDR Therapy, the Thoughts Kit for Kids, Stories and Storytellers, the Thinking Mind, the Heart, and the Body: A Book for Children about Healing and EMDR Therapy and the co-author of All the Colors of Me: My First Book about Dissociation. She has also authored several chapters in books on the use of EMDR therapy with children. Her latest book is EMDR Therapy and Adjunct Approaches with Children: Complex Trauma, Attachment, and Dissociation. Ana has also developed several programs and protocols, such as the EMDR-Sandtray protocol and an attachment-informed EMDR program for parents and children to heal intergenerational trauma.
Participants will be able to:
- Cite aspects of the Adaptive Information Processing model in conjunction with the concept of implicit memory, “right-hemisphere narratives” and the use of symbols, stories and archetypes as a way of accessing traumatic material.
- Identify the children and adolescents that can benefit from the use of sandtray therapy strategies.
- Use Sandtray strategies to identify targets, explore explicit and implicit memories.
- Use Sandtray strategies to explore parent-child dynamics and relationship patterns.
- Use basic principles of Sandtray therapy and how to incorporate them into the eight phases of EMDR therapy with children and adolescents.
- Use three levels of distance to access memories of trauma/adversity using Sandtray therapy
- Practice setting up sessions using the three levels of distance.
- Identify specific markers to determine the level appropriate for each child/adolescent.
- Use preparation strategies and to set up the assessment phase session to optimize the child’s integrative capacity using Sandtray therapy as well as constructs from the Polyvagal Theory, Interpersonal Neurobiology and Affective Neuroscience.
- Identify specific criteria for including the parent and how to set up sessions with the parent and the child using the EMDR-Sandtray protocol.
- Cite a number of interweaves that are part of the Interweave systems model (ISM)
- Use strategies to work with the parent and the child/adolescent while using the EMDR-Sandtray protocol.
- Use interweaves provided by the parent under the guidance of the clinician.
- Use ego state and Internal family systems strategies within the framework of EMDR and the EMDR-sandtray protocol.
- Process memories of trauma and adversity while titrating the traumatic material and work with parts of the personality.
